US PGA Open Betting
The United States Open Championship is one of the big four golf Majors that take place each year. Often referred to as the US PGA Open or just the US Open, the competition has been running since 1895 and takes place at different locations each year, making each event a different challenge and helping to keep it fresh and exciting for both the golfers and the fans.
The 2022 US Open will be held from June 16-19 at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.
Last year’s event was won by the Spaniard Jon Rahm, who edged out the South African Louis Oosthuizen by a single stroke to finish six under par. Rahm joined an esteemed list of golfing royalty, including Brooks Koepka, Rory Mcllroy, Justin Rose, and Tiger Woods, all of whom have won the US Open, and, as you’ll see below,
US PGA Memorable Moments
Let’s get into the swing of things with a US PGA recap of yesteryear.
On its history alone, The US Open tournament is one to watch, not only for Bodog golf betting, but simply for the memorable golf moments it creates year after year.
The Comedy Club
Back in the 1984 US PGA tour, Fuzzy Zoeller amused the crowd by waving a white towel in jest after Australian Greg Norman managed to nail a 45-foot putt, as a gesture for running up a white flag in defeat. Fast forward to 2006, when Phil Mickelson, after using the wrong club on the final hole and bouncing his ball off a merchandise tent, announced to an amused audience, “I am such an idiot!”. And an entertaining idiot, at that.
The Year of the Tiger
2008 was also a nail-biter when Tiger Woods returned to the sport after knee surgery, ending up in sudden death against Rocco Mediate. Despite being in abject pain and grimacing with every movement he made, golf’s best-known player managed to beat his challenger, making the agony that bit sweeter for Woods.
With all this rich history behind it, the 2022 running of the US Open has a lot to live up to. Here at Bodog, we’ve reviewed the prospects of the leading contenders to calculate their US PGA odds, and this is what we’ve putted into the first hole.
Jon Rahm (+1200)
At just 27, Jon Rahm is still in the early stages of his professional golf career, but his accomplishments, on paper, would tell you otherwise. After turning pro in 2016, Rahm, who currently resides far from his native Spain in Arizona, has drummed up 14 tournament wins: seven each in both the PGA and European Tours.
Rahm was last year’s US Open winner, which marked the first major championship of his career. He followed that up by finishing in equal-third position at The Open Championship in England, four strokes behind the winner, Collin Morikawa.
The former world No. 1 golfer heads into this year’s US Open as the joint-favourite, with odds of +1200. We already know he has what it takes to finish a full 72 holes ahead, as we saw in Torrey Pines, but The Country Club is a different challenge. We’ll be fixed to the fairway to see how Rahm’s swing in mid June.
Scottie Scheffler (+1200)
Scottie Scheffler, another fledgling player with a fresh face, has occupied the top spot as world No. 1 since March this year. The American will turn a spritely 26 on the other side of the US Open, so no doubt he’ll be hoping for an early birthday present.
Having turned pro just four years ago, Scheffler has already earned himself six wins, four on the PGA Tour and two on the European Tour. He began placing in single digits during the 2020 majors, finishing fourth in the PGA Championship, then managing seventh in last year’s US Open, and eighth in The Open Championship a few weeks later.
The Texan started his 2022 campaign with a bang, winning the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club back in early April, earning him joint-favourite odds for this year’s US Open.
Collin Morikawa (+1400)
At just 25, Collin Morikawa is the youngest player to make the top five in the US PGA odds. Having racked up six wins already, including two at major tournaments, the Californian, who turned pro in 2019, is emphatically deserving of the status.
His first of these wins came in 2020 when he topped the leaderboard at Harding Park for the PGA Championship. Morikawa finished 13 under par, two ahead of the Brit Paul Casey and fellow American Dustin Johnson.
Less than a year later, Morikawa also picked up a Major victory at The Open Championship after finishing the tournament at the Royal St George’s Golf Club 15 under par, two shots ahead of fellow American Jordan Spieth.
With top-class play that’s impressed the golfing community so much in a short time, Morikawa is set for one long career uptick. His US PGA odds of +1400.
Rory Mcllroy (+1400)
Rory Mcllroy is a name that you can expect to find near the top of any list of golf betting odds, no matter what tournament it is. And this year’s US Open is no different, with his odds of +1400 making him the joint-third favourite to win the tournament.
The Northern Irishman is one of the more experienced hands taking to the green, though he’s hardly run out of energy at a still-youthful 33.
Since turning pro in 2007, Mcllroy has an impressive 32 wins to his name, including four in Major championships. With only the Masters left to conquer, he hasn’t, however, managed a win in any of these big tournaments since he won The Open Championship back in 2014. That’s something he’ll want to correct this June, but whether he can is another question.
Dustin Johnson (+1600)
Dustin Johnson is four years older than Mcllroy, though they both turned pro in the same year. The American has a total of 28 wins over his professional career, including the Masters in 2020, and the US Open back in 2016.
He also came close in the PGA Championship in both 2019 and 2020, finishing second on both occasions.
Johnson will be looking to build on this momentum of recent years when he arrives at the Country Club, and his odds of +1600 certainly show that he’s capable.
