NHL Stanley Cup Odds Update

We’ve been at the edge of our seats as the NHL season took off with stunning force on January 13, despite being tossed around with scheduling and complications stemming from the coronavirus pandemic.

The teams have been realigned into four divisions, and while the Vegas Golden Knights are holding their own in the West Division, the Toronto Maple Leaves are paving their own path through Vegas and the other top NHL betting favourites.

Carolina is rising up with their fourth victory in a row, and Nathan MacKinnon is fighting for stardom for the Avalanches as they roll with a 12-7-1 record.

Before you bet on the NHL now, take a few minutes to get updated on what’s happening on the ice, including who’s got the best odds to win the Stanley Cup right now.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Starting off the season with a bang, the Leafs have overtaken the Golden Knights, Lightning and Avalanche as the top spot for the favorites in NHL odds. It’s no secret the Leafs are proving to be one of the most dependable teams for 2020/21.

Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner are on their side, boasting 10 goals, 24 assists for Matthews and 18 goals, 13 assists for Marner, no doubt helping them secure 18 wins out of 24 games.

The competition doesn’t seem to stand a chance as Toronto boasts an 18-4-2 record. That includes a combined score of 13-1 when you look at all three games played against the Edmonton Oilers. As a result of the defeat, their odds to win the Stanley Cup dropped up from +700 to +550.

As for NHL betting, you can expect Toronto’s odds to tighten up before the Cup, as long as they continue on a hot streak.

Tampa Bay Lightning

Not far behind the Leafs is Tampa Bay Lightning, who are thundering their way to the boards at NHL odds of +650.

If you’re a fan of the Lightning, you likely went ballistic when Victor Hedman stole the puck from Blackhawks Alex Killorn and slid it over the goal line… one millisecond before the overtime horn. The goal broke the 2-2 tie and secured Tampa Bay’s victory at 3-2.

That was the icing on the cake for their already top-spot point percentage of .763 for the Central Division. Then a 4-game winning streak and a 10-3-0 for February is a tell-tale sign that the Bolts aren’t slowing down any time soon.

While we’re still reeling from Hedman’s last minute win, don’t forget about goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy who’s holding the Tampa Bay fort with a remarkable save percentage of .938 in 16 starts.

The NHL odds for the Lightning have already improved from +750 to +650, marking them as the decided co-favourite just a whisker behind the Leafs.

Colorado Avalanche

Even though the Avs ‘áv not being totally healthy throughout the season, they’ve still managed to maintain some of the best possession stats in the league. Their NHL odds have stayed nice and steady around +700/+750, and they’re currently pushing ahead in the West Division with the best odds to win.

As a team that’s known for dizzying speed on the ice, 25-year old centre Nathan MacKinnon seems to be holding the team afloat with 22 points scored out of 19 games played. Add in (mostly) defensive player, Devon Toews, who has blocked 32 shots in 13 games, and you can see why Couch Jared Bednar is convinced their trajectory will keep trending up.

If you’re looking for someone to give Tampa Bay and Toronto a run for their money in this year’s NHL betting, the Avs are on their way.

Vegas Golden Knights

Despite being four points ahead of Colorado in the standings, the Vegas Golden Knights lost two of three matches against Colorado in the West Division.

In the month of February, Vegas was looking promising with a 7-3-0 record. Their odds to win the Stanley Cup have since inflated from +700 to +800, but they’re still considered a favorite for the Cup, and they’ve got a lot more to prove.

It seems Vegas has slipped a bit because of the strength of the Maple Leafs and the Lightning, but they’ve still got control of the West Division, staying ahead on a points percentage of .750 and goal differential at plus-12, mostly thanks to coach Pete DeBoer at the helm for his second year.

Marc-Andre “The Flower” Fleury is exceeding expectations when it comes to goals saved, boasting a .942 save percentage. No doubt it’s players like Fleury that are packing the roster for the Golden Knights that make them a strong force in the odds to win the Stanley Cup.

Carolina Hurricanes

The Carolina Hurricanes may not have the best odds to win the Stanley Cup in the list of top favourites at +1100, but with a points percentage of .735 and a solid start to the season, the Canes aren’t the team to ignore.

The previously 5th ranking team fell just short of a year when they suffered their first regulation loss in 359 days to the Lightning, and on their home turf, at that. They more than made up for it when Czech player Martin Necas swept up a victory at 1:59 into overtime in the March 1st match, securing their 3-2 win against the Florida Panthers.

The Detroit Red Wings suffered a similar fate when Jordan Staal and Jesper Fast took over the early parts of the third period scoring 2 goals right away, boosting them to their 5-2 victory, which is the fourth in a row of victories.

All in all, keep the Canes on your radar for NHL betting, because they’re sporting one of the strongest teams in the league right now.
