Bodog’s NFL Playoffs Preview
In the very last game of the 2022 NFL regular season, the Green Bay Packers missed out on the playoffs for the first time in four seasons. They lost 20-16 to the Detroit Lions, who’ll also be on the outside looking in. The conclusion of that game brought final clarity to the NFL playoff odds picture, with all seven teams seeded for either conference. Wild card round begins on Saturday with a matchup between the Seahawks and 49ers (-10), followed by the Chargers (-1) vs. Jags. We’ll go through each game and highlight the favourites in this NFL playoffs preview.
NFL Playoffs Preview: The Favourites
Seattle Seahawks vs San Francisco 49ers (-10)
The 49ers (13-4 SU, 11-6 ATS) check in as 10-point favourites against the Seahawks (9-8 SU, 7-10 ATS) in the weekend’s opener. They’ve been enjoying a 10-game win streak primarily with third-stringer QB Brock Purdy at the helm. This will be the third time these two teams face off this season; San Fran won both regular season games by a combined score of 48-20.
Los Angeles Chargers (-2) vs Jacksonville Jaguars
The smallest spread on the board goes to the Chargers (10-7 SU, 11-5-1 ATS)-Jaguars (9-8 SU, 8-8-1 ATS) game on Saturday. The Jags had to rally from a deficit to beat the Tennessee Titans in Week 18 in order to make the playoffs, relying heavily on their defense to get them by. These two teams faced off in Week 3, and Jacksonville won with a near flawless performance from Trevor Lawrence (3 TD, 262 yards) for a final score of 38-10.
Miami Dolphins vs Buffalo Bills (-13)
The Bills (13-3 SU, 8-7-1 ATS) have the biggest spread to cover this weekend at 13 points and for good reason. Josh Allen and co. won all of their games in the second half of the regular season (with the exception of one cancelled game) and that includes a 32-29 victory over their divisional rival Miami (9-8 SU and ATS).
New York Giants vs Minnesota Vikings (-3)
The Vikings (13-4 SU, 7-9-1 ATS) finished their season with an easy win against the hapless Chicago Bears. This weekend, they face the injury-battered Giants as 3-point home favourites and will be keen to repeat their Week 16 performance that saw them beat the Giants 27-24 despite giving up 445 total yards. The Giants stuck with a pass-heavy offensive attack that resulted in two turnovers in Vikings’ territory.
Baltimore Ravens vs Cincinnati Bengals (-8)
The Bengals (12-4 SU, 12-3-1 ATS) are riding an eight-game win streak (includes cancelled game) that concluded with a Week 18 win over Baltimore (10-7 SU, 6-9-2 ATS), who they beat 27-16 with Anthony Brown playing in place of Lamar Jackson. There’s growing pessimism about Jackson’s ability to suit up on Sunday; he’s still recovering from a knee injury and hasn’t played since Week 12.
Dallas Cowboys (-2.5) vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Cowboys (12-5 SU, 9-7-1 ATS) will lay 2.5 points to the Bucs (8-9 SU, 4-12-1 ATS) when they face off on Monday at Raymond James Stadium. These two opponents met in Week 1 of the regular season in a game that saw Dak Prescott fracture his hand and miss a quarter of the season. A lot has happened since then, including Prescott struggling through seven straight games with interceptions and ending the season with a loss that included a season-worst 37.8% completion rate.
Best NFL Playoffs Bets
Wild card props are open for business in our sportsbook. We’ll go over some of the most interesting ones, starting with the most passing yards of the weekend.
By the end of the 2022 NFL regular season, Patrick Mahomes had the most passing yards (5,250) of any QB. But since Kansas City won’t be taking part in the festivities this weekend, you’ll have to bet on one of the other top contenders, including Buffalo QB Josh Allen (+200), Cincinnati QB Joe Burrow (+225) and Chargers QB Justin Herbert (+400).
Scoring volume is another fun way to bet on Super Wild Card Weekend. You can wager on which game you think will have the most overall scoring and the lowest overall scoring: Giants-Vikings are the favourites for the former, while the Seahawks-49ers are expected to engage in a more defensive grind. Alternatively, you can simply bet on the team you think will score the most (or least) points this weekend.
There’s no doubt that some rusher and/or receiver will steal the show with an incredible performance this weekend. During last year’s wild card weekend, Tampa Bay WR Mike Evans had a monster game with 117 receiving yards, which helped Tampa Bay beat the Philadelphia Eagles. He’s on the board again at +1200, four spots behind the prop’s leader, Minnesota’s Justin Jefferson (+250).
Biggest NFL Playoff Upsets
The greatest upset to ever shock the NFL playoffs came in 1969 at Super Bowl betting. The New York Jets, of the American Football League, were massive 19.5-point underdogs against the Baltimore Colts, of the National Football League. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Jets were up 13-0 and the Colts QB, Matt Snell, was replaced with a backup after throwing three interceptions. The Jets won 16-7 and made history as the greatest NFL underdog story.
